soul’s great talent

It is my turn to offer the invocation at Rotary today and I find a quote by Thomas Moore in his book, “Care of the Soul”  that captures my heart…

“An appreciation for beauty is simply an openness to the power of things to stir the soul.  If we can be affected by beauty, then soul is alive and well in us, because the soul’s great talent is for being affected.  The word passion means basically “to be affected”, and passion is the essential energy of the soul.  The poet Rilke describes this passive power in the imagery of the flower’s structure, when he calls it a “muscle of infinite reception.”   We don’t often think of the capacity to be affected as strength and as the work of a powerful muscle, and yet for the soul, as for the flower, this is the toughest work and its main role in our lives.” (pp. 280)

I think of my friend Berta, passionate about creating beauty, inspired and inspiring, her soul power being nourished by flowers and her ability to be so powerfully affected. I think of my dear friend and neighbor Pam, who can be found out in her garden always, lovingly attending to beauty that brings her such great joy year after year.  I think of my father preparing the earth with such diligence and dedication each spring for all the beautiful plants my mother will find to plant, and all the nourishing vegetables he will plant, and how together they are affected by the flow of their day to day contact with beauty.  And I think of the legions of photos of flowers that live here in my computer, all from my own beloved garden that has now matured over years of ‘working my muscles’, and passionately digging and transplanting and weeding and planting some more.   I go back now and find these photos, and note that they are predominantly from this very time of year, the first perennial flowers of late spring, a place where I clearly feel the strength of my own  ‘muscles of infinite reception’ most keenly as I revel in the soul’s great talent….

  1. What a powerful gift you have given me today! Sharing these words, “An appreciation for beauty is simply an openness to the power of things to stir the soul. If we can be affected by beauty, then soul is alive and well in us, because the soul’s great talent is for being affected. The word passion means basically “to be affected”, and passion is the essential energy of the soul” has defined me. I feel so blessed to have a deeper understanding of myself and why I am so transcended by nature and beauty and subsequently why I am so passionate about creating it for others…….today you have helped me to define my healership…..THANK YOU!

    Much Love,
    Berta
